About Niilo

On a leave of absence from my permanent position at the CNRS, I am currently Director of the Centre for Consumer Society Research at the University of Helsinki.

From 2020 to 2021 I was visiting professor at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki and from 2015 to 2019 Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Jyväskylä, leading the Academy of Finland funded project TRACE.

Since 2005, I have been Directeur de recherche at the CNRS, the French National Center for Scientific Research, affiliated to the Institut d’études politiques de Strasbourg. Before that I was research fellow at the Academy of Finland.

From 1979 to 1980, I studied law at Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II, from 1981 to 1986 political science and philosophy at the University of Helsinki, and from 1986 to 1990 sociology for my PhD under the supervision of Pierre Bourdieu on a cotutelle University of Helsinki and Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales, Paris.
